The Last Remaining Black American Founded Town in the West

Founded in 1877, the town of Nicodemus, Kansas was a beacon of hope and self-determination for Black Americans during the post-Civil War era of Reconstruction. Part of the larger Exoduster movement, through which thousands of Black Americans migrated westward in search of land, freedom, and economic opportunity, the settlers of Nicodemus established a thriving community centered around agriculture, education, and entrepreneurship.

Managed by the National Park Service, today this site preserves numerous buildings and artifacts that offer insight into the daily lives and struggles of Nicodemus residents. It is only remaining town west of the Mississippi River founded by Black Americans during Reconstruction.

Through educational programs, exhibits, and guided tours, the Nicodemus National Historic Sitecommemorates the enduring legacy of Black American pioneers who carved out a place for themselves in the American West, contributing to the rich cultural heritage of our nation's history.

The Joy Trip Project celebrates the enduring legacy of Black American History. The Unhidden Minute is part of the Unhidden Podcast Project supported through a National Geographic Explorer Grant from the National Geographic Society, with the cooperation of the National Park Service. This series elevates the untold stories of Black American historical figures, events and cultural contributions.
