The Triple Nickels

The first military smoke jumping unit in U.S. history

The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, made history as the first Black American airborne unit in the United States military during World War II. Known as the Triple Nickels, the 555th’s combat duties, also included training as aerial deployed fire fighters, becoming the first military smoke jumping unit in American history.

Stationed in the Pacific Northwest in 1945, the Triple Nickels' primary mission was to combat wildfires caused by Japanese balloon bombs launched against the western United States. In a secret mission called Operation Firefly, they parachuted into remote forest areas to extinguish fires and remove enemy balloon bombs, often facing perilous conditions and risking their lives to protect communities and natural resources.

Their service as smoke jumpers not only saved lives and property but also challenged racial stereotypes and advanced the cause of civil rights. The Triple Nickels' bravery and sacrifice paved the way for greater opportunities and equality for Black Americans in the military and beyond.

The Joy Trip Project celebrates the enduring legacy of Black American History.
