Esteban de Dorantes, an enslaved man of African descent known as Estebanico, was born in 1500. His given name from Morocco was Mustafa Azemmuri. As an advanced    scout of the ill-fated Coronado Expedition of 1536, he explored the Colorado Plateau and what is now Coronado National Monument, in Arizona.
