When it comes to listening to and taking action on the perspectives of underrepresented communities — who are greatly impacted by systematic racism, ableism, and environmental racism — the greater outdoor community has fallen short.

In response, Together Outdoors created the Resource Hub, a powerful online tool to help BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQUIA, and other intersecting communities take ownership of the creation and distribution of resources geared towards making the outdoors accessible for all.

Dr. Carolyn Finney is a storyteller, author and a cultural geographer who is deeply interested in issues related to identity, difference, creativity, and resilience. The aim of her work is to develop greater cultural competency within environmental organizations and institutions, challenge media outlets on their representation of difference, and increase awareness of how privilege shapes who gets to speak to environmental issues and determine policy and action.

Dr. J. Drew Lanham, who is the Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher and Certified Wildlife Biologist in the Forestry and Environmental Conservation Department at the Clemson University. Drew has worked to understand how forest management impacts wildlife and how human beings think about nature and he seeks to translate conservation science to make it relevant to others in ways that are evocative and understandable.

Gerry James is the Together Outdoors Lead at the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, where he leads a cross-sector coalition of over 100 organizations, individuals, business leaders, federal agencies, activists, manufacturers and service providers who share a commitment to building an inclusive outdoor recreation community. Prior to ORR, Gerry founded Explore Kentucky, an outdoor-oriented social enterprise which works to expand outdoor accessibility, build environmental literacy, and improve quality of life for folks in Kentucky.

Moderated by James Edward Mills Community Partnership Liaison at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to his outreach work at UW-Madison, James teaches a summer course for students on diversity, equity and inclusion in outdoor recreation and public land management called Outdoors For All.  He is a freelance journalist, media producer, and creator of the Joy Trip Project.

This and other discussions on the Joy Trip Project are hosted in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, Together Outdoors, the Schlecht Family Foundation and the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
